What determines College Level Academic Skills Proficiency (CLAS)?

During the 2009 legislative session, the Legislature repealed section 1008.29, Florida Statutes, relating to the College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST). The Legislature amended section 1007.25 (12), Florida Statues. As amended, the statute now requires students to “[a]chieve a score that meets or exceeds a minimum score on a nationally standardized examination, as established by the State Board of Education in conjunction with the Board of Governors”. Alternatively, student must “achieve a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, on a 4.0 scale, in postsecondary-level coursework in conjunction with the Board of Governors” in order to be conferred an Associate in Arts and Baccalaureate Degrees.

In order to demonstrate continuing concern for institutional accountability and effectiveness, as well as performance standards for student learning outcomes, students must satisfy proficiency in math and english utilizing the following CLAS requirements for receipt of an AA degree and progression into the upper division of a baccalaureate program.

  1. Students with a 2.5 GPA in two courses for a minimum of six (6) semester hours of credit from: ENC 1101, and ENC 1102, or other Gordon Rule courses may meet the CLAS requirements for demonstrating proficiency in essay, English language skills and reading.

  2. Students with a 2.5 GPA in college-level mathematics courses (excluding MAT 1033) may meet proficiency requirements in mathematics. The mathematics courses that may be used to meet the requirement are listed below.  The use of these courses will be retroactive for all students who have not yet graduated.

    • MAC* 1105 College Algebra or any other MAC course with the last three digits being higher than 105
    • MGF*106 Liberal Arts Mathematics I
    • MGF*107 Liberal Arts Mathematics II
    • MGF*113 Topics in College Mathematics I
    • MGF*114 Topics in College Mathematics II
    • MGF*118 Mathematics CLAS Review
    • MGF*202 Finite Mathematics or any other MGF courses with the last three digits being higher than any Gordon Rule Statistics course.

  3. ACT: Scores on ACT with minimum scores in each section may meet the CLAS requirements.

    • Reading: ACT score of 21 or higher
    • Writing: ACT score of 21 or higher
    • Mathematics: ACT score of 22 or higher

  4. SAT: Scores on SAT with minimum scores in each section may meet the CLAS requirements.

    • Verbal/Critical Reading:  SAT score of 500 or higher
    • Mathematics:                 SAT score of 500 or higher

  5. CPT: Scores on ACCUPLACER® with minimum scores in each section may meet the CLAS requirements:

    • Reading:           Accuplacer/CPT score of 93 or higher
    • Writing              Accuplacer/CPT score of 105 or higher 
    • Mathematics:     Accuplacer/CPT score of 91 or higher

  6. Credit by Exam: Course credit for a combination of two Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Advanced International Certificate Education, or DSST, or College level Examination Program examinations within the English and/or college algebra or higher mathematics/statistics areas that equate with a 2.5 GPA in two courses for a minimum of six (6) credits may meet the CLAS proficiency requirements. Credit by exam must equate with a combination of having two Ps, or B + P,  or, P + A combination.

How do I sign up for the College Level Academic Skills (CLAS) Alternative Examinations?

  • Students may register for the ACT exam by visiting the  ACT Web site or call Act Registration at (319) 337-1270.
  • Students may register for the SAT exam by visiting the SAT Web site or call SAT Customer Service at (866) 756-7346.
  • Students may take the Accuplacer College Placement exam (CPT) by contacting the assessment and certification center.

How much does it cost to take the CLAS Alternative Assessments?

By visiting the ACT Web site or SAT Web site will give you important information regarding the cost, dates, locations, and times of the assessment.

Florida State College members may take the CPT for the first time at no cost. Non degree seeking students are required to pay $29.00.  Florida State College members pay a $22.00 non-refundable and non-transferable fee for the second and any subsequent tests.

What happens if a student does not pass one or more of the subtests of the CLAS Alternative Exams?

Students who have not passed one or more subtests must wait 31 days between examinations.

Are special assessment arrangements available for students with disabilities?

Yes. Adaptations of assessment materials, as well as of assessment conditions, are made for students with documented physiological impairments or learning disabilities. It is the responsibility of students who need special assessment arrangements to request them when registering for the CLAS Alternative Exams.

How do students prepare to take the CLAS Alternative Exams?

Students may prepare for the ACT and SAT by visiting the ACT and SAT Web sites. To prepare for the CPT, students may purchase the CPT workbook from the bookstore or work with the Learning commons tutor to prepare for the CPT exam.

Can students request a waiver?

Students who fail one or more subtests 3x times may request a waiver by contacting the Dean of Student Success.

What do I bring to the assessment?

Please bring a current picture id with your signature, and several soft-leaded pencils with erasers.
