Learning Center

Information for Writing Resources

Welcome to the Learning Center English/communications lab. The English lab is staffed by a professional English instructor and peer tutors. All will give assistance at every level of the writing process, from brainstorming to refining the final draft and from grammar to documenting the research paper. Tutoring is FREE and no appointment is necessary. Check with the coordinator at 904.381.3449 for specific times and let us help you hone your writing and grammar skills. Current term schedules may be obtained from the one of the two revolving display racks in the Learning Center or from the English area table.

The Virginia Tech Division of Student Affairs offers self-help information; this Web site has a wide range of effective study skills: time scheduling, not taking, how to read a difficult book, writing papers, etc.

Purdue University Academic Skills Center offers  suggestions for time management, staying focused, lecture note taking, reading speed, understanding the textbook, and test taking skills.
Grammar Practice:  

This site contains a list of various grammar Web sites and explanations of each.

This is the Capital Community College Web site for grammar practice.  One may either click on “Instruction” or “Quiz”.  Extremely helpful!

This is a link to online grammar exercises, with Diagnostic Quizzes available at the end.

Literacy Education Online information on subject and verb agreement

This Web site is one of the finest we have ever seen!  It has links to grammar practices, Business English issues, ESL information, as well as Reference Desk information.

The University of Ottawa provides a Web site aimed to teach the eight parts of speech: noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, adjective, preposition, conjunction, and interjection.  This site is short, but each part of speech has a separate link, offering a detailed explanation.  At the bottom of the page, to test one’s knowledge of the parts of speech, there is a twenty question overview.
