Frequently Asked Questions for the Commercial Vehicle Driving Program
Books, tuition and special fees total $2,026.00. Additional license fees, medical/drug tests and background investigation total $257.00.
The program is 320 contact hours long, or 8 weeks of school time.
All classes are held at Florida Community College's Aviation Center of Excellence (ACE) located at Cecil Center South.
Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. During the 7th week, the class times will shift to a night schedule to accommodate the night driving training.

The program consists of 4 courses of 80 hours each. Initial courses deal with the body of knowledge necessary to pass the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle (DHSMV) written tests for the Class A Drivers Permit with air brake endorsement. Follow-on courses provide hands-on experience in inspection technique, shifting, backing and parking on FCCJ’s Driving Range, and include approximately 800 miles of over-the-road driving including 200 miles of night driving. A high-fidelity truck simulator is used to train students in general maneuvering, shifting, defensive driving, evasive maneuvering and decision making.
Yes, scholarships are available. Students should fill out the FAFSA application on the FAFSA Website to apply for the CMV Scholarship. If eligible, Worksource is also a source of tuition assistance, contact Ervin Kohn at 904-381-3631 for more details. Some trucking companies will reimburse tuition as part of an employment contract. FCCJ’s Career Development Center has partnered with the First Coast’s premier job placement agency, WorkSource, to help match you with employers and get the job you want. Trucking company representatives will visit the class and provide information on their companies as well as accept employment applications. Local trucking companies are members of our Advisory Committee and have expressed great interest in hiring our graduates. It is not uncommon for our students to be “pre-hired” by multiple trucking companies pursuant to the student’s successful completion of the course.
Students must be a high school graduate or possess a GED. In addition, students must pass a DOT (NIDA) 5 Panel Drug Screen, a DOT Physical exam and a 7-year motor vehicle background check (MVR) prior to beginning classes. Students must have no more than six (6) points in violations on his/her driver license in the past three (3) years, have no DUI (Driving Under the Influence) violations within the past seven (7) years.

Yes, but depending on the type of felony and when it occurred, you may not be able to qualify for either a HAZMAT endorsement or gain access to a TSA designated port, such as the Port of Jacksonville.
