Summer Camps 2008

We will be offering several exciting and enriching summer camps at all of our campuses across Jacksonville and Nassau County. Our sports camps have been popular in North Florida for years, but there’s so much more than sports! Camp information will continue as we add new camps, so come back often.

True North Summer Academy for Males
North Campus, 4501 Capper Road

True North offers growth and learning opportunities that build character and develop leadership, academic, and life skills. On the North Campus of FCCJ, True North provides a safe, secure, and clean environment with breakfast, lunch and snacks furnished each day. Typical activities include: field trips, swimming, service projects, math and reading skill developing, career exploration, and fun.

Age range of participants: Boys entering grades 7–10 at one of the following schools:
Northwestern Middle School, Jean Ribault Middle School, Jean Ribault High School or William M. Raines High School
Dates and Times: Monday–Friday, July 7–Aug. 11, 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
Parent/Student Orientation: Monday, July 7, 6 p.m., North Campus Auditorium

Aviation Math and Space Summer Camps
Cecil Center South (ACE), 13450 Lake Fretwell Street

For the past five years, FCCJ’s Aviation Summer Camps have been a huge success. The two-week camps utilize aviation as a conduit for practical application of the principles of math and science theories involved in flight. Activities will include classroom instruction, research, project design/construction, plus field trips to airports, IMAX theaters, museums and the Kennedy Space Center. Flight simulators and actual training flights will be used to demonstrate theories, principles and laws of mathematics and science.

Mach I – Introduction to Flight
Introduction to Flight is designed to provide an orientation to flight principles.
Age range of participants: Boys and girls, grades 5–9
Dates and Times: Session 1: June 9–20, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
Session 2: June 23–July 3, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
Session 3: July 7–18, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
Session 4: July 21–Aug. 1, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
Cost: $325 per student for one two-week camp of instruction/participation

Mach II – Cross Country Navigation
Cross Country Navigation is designed to provide a more advanced look at aviation and navigation in the National Air-space System (NAS).
Age range of participants: Boys and girls, grades 6–10
Dates and Times: Session 1: June 9–20, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
Session 2: June 23–July 3, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
Session 3: July 7–18, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
Session 4: July 21–Aug. 1, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
Cost: $325 per student for one two-week camp of instruction/participation

Mach III – Advanced Concepts of Flight Performance
Advanced Concepts of Flight Performance is designed to go even deeper – covering orientation, navigation and actual flight instruction in either a light sport aircraft (LSA) or a general aviation (GA) aircraft.
Age range of participants: Boys and girls, grades 10–12
Dates and Times: July 7–18, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
Cost: $325 per student for one two-week camp of instruction/participation

Space Camp
Intended for students with an enthusiasm for math and science exploration. This summer camp will include model rocket construction, aerospace projects and field trips to include the Kennedy Space Center, Challenger Center and the IMAX theater. Each camper will experience the thrill of space and exploration.
Age range of participants: Boys and girls, grades 5–9
Dates and Times: Session 1: June 9–20, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
Session 2: July 7–18, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

Advanced Space Camp
Designed for “alumni” campers to further enhance and strengthen their knowledge and enthusiasm in the area of space to include a look at future concepts such as the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO).
Age range of participants: Boys and girls, grades 5–9
Dates and Times: Session 1: June 23–July 3, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
Session 2: July 21–Aug. 1, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

Aviation Model
Basic building techniques of simple hand launch gliders and progressing into electric free flight and simple radio control:

FCCJ Baseball Summer Camp
North Campus, 4501 Capper Road

Areas of emphasis include fundamentals of hitting, fielding, throwing, running, conditioning, attitude development, teamwork and sportsmanship. Daily awards and reading program complete the camp experience.

Little BIG Leaguers Camp

Age range of participants:
Ages 5–12
Dates and Times: June 16–27, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Cost: $200 per player (includes lunch); bring money for ice break.
Equipment Needed: Cap and glove every day, money for the concession stand, and a bathing suit and towel. Note: Please label all personal items.

FCCJ Basketball Summer Camp
South Campus, 11901 Beach Blvd.

Come and join this years “Superstars” Basketball with all the fun and games of basketball. Campers will learn from fundamental instruction in all areas of the game of basketball. Ball handling, shooting, passing, rebounding, defense and team play will be greatly emphasized. Instruction will be given by college/high school coaches as well as college athletes. Campers need to dress in shorts and T-shirt with basketball sneakers. The camp is held at our South Campus and has excellent sports facilities with all the latest equipment.

Age range of participants: Boys and girls, ages 8–14

Camp Broadway
South Campus, 11901 Beach Blvd.

Workshops in singing, dancing and acting. Campers work together to perform ensemble pieces at the finale on Friday. Camp taught by Broadway theater professionals from New York.

Age range of participants: Boys and girls, ages 10–17

ChemCamp: Making Molecules
North Campus, 4501 Capper Road

With visits to five Jacksonville chemical plants, ChemCamp will demonstrate real world applications of science, mathematics and technology, and show the relevance of academic work to the real world. This camp is intended for rising eighth graders from North Jacksonville schools.

Age range of participants: Boys and girls, ages 13–15
Dates and Times: Monday–Friday, June 9–13, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
Cost: Free (funded by the North Jacksonville Community Advisory Panel)
Lunch: Lunch will be provided each day at the chemical plants

“Crime Scene Investigation” (CSI) Summer Camp
Advanced Technology Center, 401 W. State Street

The CSI campers will examine a “crime scene,” collect evidence, perform analysis, use forensic techniques, extract DNA, identify fibers, explore the field of data security and more. Camp instructors are subject matter experts from Florida Community College faculty. A mock trial to display skills learned and exemplified will take place on the last day of the camp. We will have one of Duval Counties own Judges to participate and show campers how the judicial procedure operates. Additional outside professional resources from: Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, FDLE, and the Florida Department of Health will bring their expertise into this fun-packed learning environment.

Age range of participants: Boys and girls, 12–15
Dates and Times: Session 1: July 7–11, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
Session 2: July 21–25, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
Cost: $350 per student for one week of camp (includes $50 registration fee and $300 fee for supplies, snacks and lunches)

Gospel Summer Camp
Downtown Campus, 101 W. State St.

This camp is for young people interested in gospel and sacred music.

Age range of participants: Boys and girls, ages 10–17
Dates and Times: Monday–Thursday, June 9–12 and June 16–19, 9 a.m.–2 p.m.
Cost: $110 per participant for one two–week camp (includes t-shirt)

Hoopville Basketball Camp
South Campus, 11901 Beach Blvd.

Campers will be taught the importance of game fundamentals such as ball handling, shooting and passing. They’ll also have an opportunity to learn the different aspects of playing basketball with positioning, movement, defense and rebounding — then use what they’ve learned and incorporate it into games to play 3-on-3 and 5-on-5. There will be daily competitions and awards given at the end of each camp session. Campers need to dress in shorts and a t-shirt with sneakers, and are allowed to bring their own water bottles.

Age range of participants: Boys and girls, ages 6–15
Dates and Times: Session 1: Mon., June 23–Thurs., June 26, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Session 2: Mon., June 30–Thurs., July 3, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Cost: With lunch: $130 per player for each session
Without lunch: $115 per player for each session
Lunch: Campers can choose to bring their own lunch or pay for provided lunches.
Pre-/Post-Camp Care: Pre-camp care (included in the camp cost) begins at 8 a.m. and post-camp care runs until 5 p.m.

Learn to Swim
North Campus

Certified instructors will teach basic swimming skills to individuals from 6–year–olds to adults. All courses are designed to help students learn to swim or improve their swimming skills with new strokes, stroke refinements, diving safety, techniques and more.

Summer Musical Theatre Experience
South Campus, Wilson Center for the Arts, 11901 Beach Blvd.

Discover performance and theater technology! Under direction and coaching, participants will produce the full-length musical production Damn Yankees. Actors, Dancers, singers, musicians, set painters, stage technicians and costume designers are needed. Previous theatre experience not required.

FCCJ, First Coast Community Music School and Tots ‘N’ Teens Theatre, Inc., partner to provide musical and theatre experiences, and engage participants in the full complement of artistic endeavors. Participants can participate in one or both camp components.

FCCJ Robotics Camp

Participants will learn valuable team building, leadership and programming skills while assembling Lego Mindstorms NXT robots. Camp is limited to 24 students. Pre-camp and post-camp care are not available.

FCCJ Tennis Camp
South Campus, 11901 Beach Blvd.

Participants will learn tennis rules, basic strokes, agility and basic movement around court. There will be indoor activities in case of rain. Campers will need to bring a water bottle, tennis shoes and a racquet.

Age range of participants: Boys and girls, ages 7–15
Level Beginner to intermediate
Dates and Times: Session 1: June 9–12, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Session 2: June 16–19, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.

FCCJ Volleyball Camp
South Campus, 11901 Beach Blvd.

For 18 years FCCJ has offered the youth of Jacksonville and surrounding areas the chance to improve their volleyball skills and learn more about the sport through high quality summer camps. FCCJ offers camps for beginners, intermediate and advanced players from the elementary to high school ages. Kids just starting out can learn the basics while more experienced players can learn expertise at specific positions or team strategies in the team camps. (Free camp T-shirt for every camper included.) The deadline for the summer volleyball camps is July 2, 2008. See the Volleyball Camps Web page for contact information and applications.

Junior High/JV Camps
This camp is for beginning to intermediate players.

Age range of participants:
Boys and girls, grades 5–9
Dates and Times: Session 1: July 14–16, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Session 2: July 17–19, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Cost: $105 per player for each session

Pee Wee and Little Spikes
This camp will teach basic movement and ball skills.

Age range of participants:
Boys and girls, ages 5–10
Dates and Times: July 10–11, 9 a.m.–noon
Cost: $65

Position Specialty Camps
This camp will develop skills at the positions of setter, middle blocker, outside hitter or DS/Libero.
Note: Players can attend both sessions of Position Specialty Camps – Cost: $65.
Varsity Players
Age range of participants: Boys and girls, ages 15–18 only.
Must have one year of Varsity experience.
Dates and Times: Session 1: July 21, 1–4 p.m.
Session 2: July 25, 1–4 p.m.
Cost: $35
JH and JV Players
Age range of participants: Boy and girls, ages 12–15 only
Dates and Times: Session 1: July 21, 9 a.m.–noon
Session 2: July 25, 9 a.m.–noon

Varsity and JV Team Camp with Team Building Sessions
This camp will stress team drills and team competition. Camp is limited to 10 Varsity Teams and eight JV Teams.
Dates and Times: Team Camp Sessions July 24–26, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
Cost: $105 with team of six players from the same school
$125 as an individual player

Camp Wildwoods: Wilderness Adventure Camp
Nassau Outdoor Education Center, 76346 William Burgess Blvd., Yulee

Campers will participate in archery, canoeing, environmental education, arts and crafts, drama, team building, climbing, journal keeping and general sports. Check out the Counselor in Training program, or Smoky Mountain Camp for adventurous travelers!

Age range of participants: Boys and girls, ages 5–14
Plus a Counselor in Training Program for 15–17 year olds
Dates:
Session 1 (ages 5-10): June 9–June 20, 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m.
(Fridays June 13 and 20 are overnight campouts for 7–10 year olds only)
Session 2 (ages 11–14): June 23–July 4, 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m.
(Fridays June 27 and July 4 are overnight campouts)
Cost: $300 per session plus $10 fee per overnight
Lunches: Campers pack their own lunch. We provide snacks and food on the overnights.

Counselor in Training (CIT) Program
Participants will be trained in team building, group dynamics and leadership. Half of each camp day will be spent in training; the remainder of each day will be spent with campers from the Wilderness Adventure Camp.
Age range of participants: Boys and girls, ages 15–17
Dates:
Session 1: June 9–June 20, 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m.
(Fridays June 13 and 20 are overnight campouts)
Session 2: June 23–July 4, 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m.
(Fridays June 27 and July 4 are overnight campouts)
Cost: $150 per session for first year CITs
$100 per session for second year CITs
$50 per session for third year CITs
Lunches: Campers pack their own lunch. We provide snacks and food on the overnights.

Smoky Mountain Camp
This resident camp begins at 1 p.m. on the first day of the session and ends at 10 a.m. on the last day of the session. Transportation to and from camp is to be provided by parents. All meals, gear and admission fees are included in the cost.
Age range of participants: Boys and girls, ages 8–15
Dates: Session 1: July 14–23
Session 2: July 25–August 3
Cost: $1,100
