Month–long Bicycling Celebration at Florida Community College North Campus

Eco–rides, films, photo exhibit, safety and equipment demonstrations, May 20–June 25

What: North Campus Goes Bicycling
When: May 20 through June 25

4501 Capper Road and the Jacksonville–Baldwin Trail

Cost: Free and open to the public

Details: The economical, healthful and enjoyable benefits of bicycle riding are explored in a month–long celebration of events for students and the public. The events include the following:

  1. During the North Campus Goes Bicycling celebration, Bicycling films will be reserved at the North Campus Library Circulation Desk for on–campus viewing. The Library is located in Bldg. D, Room 301. Titles on reserve include Breaking Away, the six–part series Bicycling through History, and Bicycle Corps, the documentary on the U.S. Army’s mainly African–America 25th Infantry in 1897.
  2. “Key West to Maine”: A photography exhibit by Faith Vicinanza from her 2,500 mile bicycle journey. North Campus Art Gallery, Bldg. D, Room 301. Student Exhibit Opening May 20 at 11 a.m. hosted by Florida Times–Union columnist Mark Woods. Public Exhibit Opening on May 20 at 6 p.m. The exhibit continues until June 25.
  3. Demonstration: How to use the JTA bus rack, May 20 at noon; bus loop below D Building
  4. Ride–In #1, May 21 at 7:30 a.m. Be ready to ride a leisurely six miles from the Highlands Shopping Plaza (Publix shopping center) on Dunn Ave. Please park in the back of the adjacent lot next to the Publix building. The trip will have an eco–guide to talk about the natural and cultural history of Jacksonville surrounding North Campus. Don’t forget to wear a helmet and bring water. The eco–guide will return to the Highlands Plaza at 4:30 p.m. Reservations are requested; please call 904.766.6785.
  5. Ride–In #2, May 31 at 9 a.m. An eco–guide will lead a tour of along the Jacksonville–Baldwin Trail. The tour will leave from the east end on Imeson Rd. Novice riders do not have to ride the whole trail and can turn back at any point. Don’t forget to wear a helmet and bring water. Reservations are requested.
  6. Demonstration: Auto–Shifting Bicycle Riding, June 4, from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. The Trek Bicycle Store of Jacksonville will answer questions about their new Trek Lime auto–shifting bicycle outside of the North Campus Café.
  7. Demonstration: Trikkes, Bents, and Folders, June 11, from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. Come see the Trikke, a combination skateboard and bicycle, along with recumbent and folding cycles outside the North Campus Café. Jax Trikkes and Lakeshore Cycling and Fitness provide the demo and answer questions about the equipment.
  8. How to Feel Comfortable (on your bike, that is). June 18 from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. Lessons in bicycle and helmet fitting outside the North Campus Café, pending confirmation.
