Scholarships available to Duval, Clay and St. Johns students

Florida Community College at Jacksonville is once again offering the Summer Arts Institute for Creative Youth, an intensive two-week summer program for students ages 13-17. Students have a choice of studying three subjects from the following arts disciplines: Acting/Improvisation, Creative Writing/Playwriting, Black and White Photography, Digital Photography, Graphic Arts/Cartooning, Drawing and Painting, Ceramics, Sculpture, Printmaking and Mixed Media. Students choose one art form to study in the mornings for the length of the program, then choose one art form to study in the afternoon the first week and a different form the second week.

The application process includes a completed application, an essay, a list of awards and accomplishments, a letter of recommendation and a $50 application fee. Application and details can be found by visiting the Summer Arts Institute Web page.

The College has been awarded a Governor’s Summer Program grant which will cover the $500 tuition and daily lunch voucher for qualifying students in Duval, Clay and St. Johns counties. Students who want to apply for the scholarships must apply through their county’s Exceptional Student Education office (Duval 904.346.4601; Clay 904.272.8100; St. Johns 904.819.7148).

Students who wish to apply have until June 1 to submit their applications; however, due to the limited number of spaces all students are urged to apply as soon as possible. Students applying for regular admission may call 904.646.2111 for an application and more information.

The daily program begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 4 p.m. Students are responsible for their transportation.
