Florida Community College Upward Bound Program is recruiting 9th and 10th grade students for the Fall 2008 Session
Florida Community College’s Upward Bound program is seeking 9th and 10th grade students from the four area high schools for the Fall 2008 session that begins in September. Upward Bound provides academic support activities that facilitate high school completion and postsecondary enrollment. Program services include career development and academic assessment, counseling, tutoring and cultural enrichment.
Throughout the year, students attend academic sessions on Saturdays at the Betty P. Cook Nassau Center. They also participate in field trips to the annual College Fair, college tours, Museum of Science and History, World Golf Village, The Ritz Center, and the Kennedy Space Center. Each year the officers attend the annual Student Leadership Conference. Students attend monthly workshops on financial aid, career development, and study skills and they receive a monetary incentive for attending each Saturday session.
Upward Bounders get an opportunity to spend one month on a college campus. Academic courses and recreational activities are all a part of the real life experience. Participants compete for the title of Mr. and Miss Upward Bound and in the Upward Bound Olympics. Tournaments include basketball, tennis, swimming, softball, essay writing, weight lifting and billiards. If students are placed in a campus job during the summer, they will receive a stipend for summer employment.
