Details: James Bohary, an abstract expressionist painter living and working in Manhattan, uses surface texture to his advantage in these vibrant abstractions replete with thick, richly colored impasto. The energy of his brushwork captures the play of light, the motion and the emotive qualities of landscapes both urban and natural. The spontaneity and colorful quality of these works are contrasted with the somber, mysterious, densely layered figurative paintings of his former student Judith Williams.
For Williams, who settled in Jacksonville after a successful career as a designer and muralist in upstate New York and Scottsdale, Arizona, the approach to her personal work is a vast departure from that of her professional life. Years of study and application have resulted in a style which is hauntingly beautiful, introspective and highly textural.
This exhibit will be on display from Aug. 25 to Sept. 24 at the South Gallery in the Wilson Center for the Arts, M–1, on the South Campus of Florida Community College at Jacksonville. A reception will be held on Sept. 11 from 5–7 p.m. A lecture with Williams will be held the first week of September, time to be announced.
